Lithium and Alcohol consumption

Post by bipolardad »

I'm currently on 900 mg of lithium. I have totally quit alcohol, since taking lithium again. I was on it for years and drank, socially, to sometimes heavily. I guess it sounds like I am asking for permission to drink again. But, I'm really asking what you all think about re-introducing alcohol, while suffering from bipolar 2 and taking lithium. Thanks

"If you drink alcohol, you can continue to drink some alcohol while taking lithium but drinking alcohol can make you dehydrated. If this happens, the lithium level may rise in your body and reach a toxic level."

My feeling about it... alcohol is a depressant. If you feel manic (rapid speech-ish), I think one beer is OK. Otherwise, I wouldn't do it.

Good luck Dad!
