To appreciate a commenting piece of art one needs the context of the original work and also be aware of the motives that the artist had while reworking it. So, how did you feel after doing that?
I guess if you have a strong artistic impulse you think, "There's more where that came from anyway", right?
The artist friend of ours was once tossing out a stone-sculpture bust of a fellow artist he'd made many years before. We said "Nooo...! Can we have it?". He said "Sure", and we've had it in the garden for years. People sometimes comment as they walk by.
Just this spring we noticed that the nose had dropped off, and my wife wanted to pitch it out. I said "No, I can try to glue it back on" ... I've become a bit attached to the thing...
