I agree with fifthsonata. People turn to it because they can't express or effectively deal with their pain. I understand the images must be really strange and probably disturbing to you, and I think I know where you're coming from. I still occasionally have nightmares where I dream I'm self-harming.

My mother does kind of the same thing. Maybe sometime when you're both calm, explain how the way she communicates can be hurtful. Marriage counseling? I'm sorry I can't be of much help. Only 22 here.
