Re: Abuse and Trauma in kids on the Rez
FuckingSensitive! I found a GRRRRRRRREAT resource for working with kids around appropriate sexual development! (I know - this resource comes about four months later than I was planning, but it will be worth the wait, I promise!) https://www.advocatesforyouth.org/storage/advfy/documents/circles.pdf I...

Re: Online theapy
Hello hope2cope, good to hear from you again! I'm glad that our conversation was helpful. :) I'm not super familiar with online therapy - you could either go the same route as Paul and go to goodtherapy.com, or you can check with your local mental health agency and see if they do something called te...

Re: Where to start?
WHAT A GOOD QUESTION. I'll answer this from a couple of different angles. As a mental health clinician: Acknowledge that it happened. Name it. Also, acknowledge that it affected you. So many people with trauma want to minimize - it's a POWERFUL coping skill, and makes dealing with trauma in everyday...

Re: Lithium and weight gain
Hi Dave,
This is normal. Lithium in its chemical (non-pill) form is a salt, which can cause you to retain water or gain weight. Good question!
Best,
Ryan

Re: Doing 'work' in therapy.
Ok. To preface, I'm not talking as a therapist on this particular thread as much as I am talking as someone who has been in therapy for six years...but also as a therapist, because that's part of my personhood too. The thing about therapy for me is that I did all of this hard work without even reali...

Re: Tips for finding a therapist who will listen
Reading your posts, I wonder if individual therapy is right for you right now? If you're struggling to find someone who will listen and help you to find your inner worth, does it have to be a therapist? Could it be a support or therapy group instead? I wonder if it's not so much finding a therapist ...

Re: Abuse and Trauma in kids on the Rez
Oof. This is a TOUGH situation. I know you were hoping for more concrete information about how to help these kids in what sounds like a horrendous situation, the most important tool you can give them is you. You are clearly creating a safe place for them, and just being there with them is making a b...

Re: Hi, Everyone!
Hi, hope2cope, and thanks so much for reaching out with your question. The holidays can be so difficult, can't they? I am not a parent, so let me say that at the outset; however, as a child of divorce who also struggles with these issues, as well as having two parents who also struggle with these is...

Re: Hi, Everyone!
This is a great question, Mikeal - I would imagine that it's common (not just in you and me!) to debate the merits of the holidays and spending them around family when being around them doesn't necessarily help us to feel good about ourselves. My question for you is that aside from the things that y...

Hi, Everyone!
Thanks so much for having me on this forum! A little bit about me: I am currently in my final/internship year as a Clinical Mental Health Counseling student in Northern New England, and I have an emerging interest in trauma counseling. My current internship setting is working in community mental hea...
