Re: The Racist in my head

Guybrarian, Much respect to you for being aware of your upbringing and wanting to transcend it. Even as a minority myself, my parents could also be quite racist in private, and while I'm lucky to have had the chance to meet and connect with many people of the races my parents would speak disparaging...

Re: Chronic Pain

Bigfun, I'm hearing you here and I'm grateful you have shared your story here. Those are some rough circumstances. My mother suffered from chronic pain for a few years in her life and I saw how significantly it affected her ability to participate in relationships, so I feel for you. I find that it i...

Re: Fakebook suggestion: being...genuine?

A lot of what's been posted here definitely resonates. There was a time when I was referring to Facebook in my head as "The Envy Machine" — a machine for generating the feeling that you're somehow inadequate, failing or missing out on life because the pictures from your own life are nowher...

Re: How much isolation is enough/too much?

Thank you all for reading and responding. @manuel_moe_g: Good perspective. Your response is reminding me that it's no one's business but my own whether or not I prioritize my own growth. Cultivating that thought takes a lot of effort so I welcome the reminder. @gfyourself: Good suggestion. I may be ...

Re: You can't make another person feel as you wish?

Hm. I didn't listen to that episode of the podcast so I'm just going from what you've written. What I have learned from the cognitive behavioural therapy I've been going to, however, is that it is very taxing to try and directly act upon your feelings to feel something other than what you feel. That...

How much isolation is enough/too much?

Sharing a bit of my story here to see if anyone else has had an experience like this. (I've started and backtracked like 3 times wondering which board to post to and finally settling on this one. Something tells me there is no perfect fit!) A couple months ago I realized that all of my friends were ...

Re: I feel not great

Good for you for exercising! It is indeed very important and I know for me, it always seems like I have a gazillion and one reasons not to do it... and then when I finally do I wonder why I put so much energy into stalling.

Hope you are holding up OK.

Re: Burnt out on OKCupid

Hi a_schoe, Thanks for sharing your story. I don't have any firsthand experience with online dating. I have a fairly strong disdain for it. Reading this article from The New Republic http://www.newrepublic.com/article/112401/perils-online-dating really opened my eyes to the root of my negative feeli...

Re: Feeling like I'm hitting a low point

weary, It's bordering on creepy now, how much what you are writing resonates with my own experience. I guess in my own low times, when I am close to convincing myself that I must be the only one in academia who feels the way I do, my memory will be like, "Ha, NOPE!" It is interesting how s...

Re: My cat died

Sorry to hear of the sudden loss, Herself. Re: guilt, I think it's fine to observe that you aren't feeling the kind of thing that other pet-owners might. Judging yourself for not feeling the expected way is (going out on a limb here) probably not going to make you feel something that you flat-out ju...
