"I am nothing, I am a nobody", revisited

I felt like I knew what compassion and self-compassion were. But when I first turned towards them and deliberately tried to experience and exercise them, I couldn’t. It’s a different proposition to actually practice them. Turning deliberately towards them the first time they felt like nothing.

I persevered and now my exercise of them is more like the effort of feebly batting at them. Or, more hopefully, like a kitten batting it’s paw on your arm. A small capacity but there are noticeable effects of the exercise, in my contact with the self and the world.

So, it’s not an option on a menu you just click to activate. When you start out, it feels like nothing. Then it grows.

I feel so bad for the younger selves that live inside me. I sometimes hate them so much.

Manny Moe,

Your quote makes me think of the Emily Dickinson poem, "I'm Nobody! Who are you?" which we may have discussed here before.

I won't try to convince you of anything regarding your worth this evening. I'll just say that you're somebody to me, and somebody special at that.

I just noticed other posts I'd missed.

Beany, I love your image of the kitten. It's exactly how self-compassion felt to me at first. So slight that I doubted it was there at all, but it has grown to the point that at least some of the things I said and did to myself before are now a bit shocking to me.

Mental Fairy, your inner voices are so cruel and unfair. My heart goes out to you & I'm sending you hugs.

Yesterday I started feeling so foolish, because it took me 50 years on this earth to realize that the sun doesn't shine out of my ass. What an idiot.

Ugh, and i have to wake up so darn early to get to work on time, an 2 hours thirty minutes to get out the door, because my head is so full of sleepiness, and i realized that being on the ADHD spectrum my executive functioning part of my brain is crap, so i plod so slowly through all the morning things i have to do. If i didn't take shower the night before, would be even worse, if that can be believed, how can anything be slower than a glacier.

Hmmm, Manuel Moe. I can't help but wonder if you have sleep apnea.

If you snore, I encourage you to contact a doctor.

If you ever wake up choking, then it is time for immediate action. If that ever happens, heaven forbid, contact me right away.

Manuel Moe, the following Reddit link doesn’t have anything to do with this thread, per se, but I saw it and immediately thought about what you’ve posted about, here in the forum:
