I have always related to that Pink Floyd song. That has the lyric " I'm just another lost soul swimming in a fish bowl year after year..... Also their song I have become comfortably numb...

Wavin Flag. K'NAAN
" When I get older, I will be stronger, they'll call me freedom; just like a wavin flag. "

I relate to this song on so many levels even though my background is the polar opposite from the artist.
All I want is peace, and to be free from this illness, free from myself and feel joy and happiness.
Mental Illness has taken that from me. I Ammon mess and have been in and continue to be in all kinds of treatment.
Some days I just cant find hope. This song gives me just that. Hope..

Hello,

I'm new to this board and to the podcast. I'm enjoying both very much.

The following is kind of long, but is always relevant, no matter what time in my life I read it. The only thing that changes is whether I feel like Liam or Eunice.

Thanks,
Barbara

"...Sometimes I think my life is just ... drying up and hardening, like one of those mouse carcasses you find beneath a radiator."

If Eunice was surprised by this, it was nothing compared to how he himself felt. He seemed to hear his own words as if someone else had spoken them. He cleared his throat and spread his fingers across his knees.

"Well, only on off days, of course," he said.

"I know exactly what you mean," she told him.

"You do?"

I'm always thinking, Why don't I have any hobbies? Other people do. Other people develop these passions; they collect things or they research things or they birdwatch or they snorkel. They join book groups or they reenact the Civil War. I'm just trying to make it through to bedtime every night."

"Yes," Liam said.

"I don't see myself as a mouse carcass, though, but more like one of those buds that haven't opened yet. I'm hanging there on the bush all closed up."

Great thread! That Abraham Lincoln quote was something; I'd never heard it before.

The Kate Bush song "Never Be Mine" hits close to home for me, relating to my limerence/wanting-what-I-can't-have issuses:

I look at you and see
My life that might have been:
Your face just ghostly in the smoke.
They're setting fire to the cornfields
As you're taking me home.
The smell of burning fields
Will now mean you and here.

This is where I want to be.
This is what I need.
This is where I want to be.
This is what I need.
This is where I want to be,
But I know that this will never be mine.

Ooh, the thrill and the hurting.
The thrill and the hurting.
I know that this will never be mine.

I want you as the dream,
Not the reality.
That clumsy goodbye-kiss could fool me,
But I'm looking back over my shoulder
At you, happy without me.

This is where I want to be.
This is what I need.
This is where I want to be.
This is what I need.
This is where I want to be,
But I know that this will never be mine.

Ooh, the thrill and the hurting
Will never be mine.
The thrill and the hurting,
It will never be mine.
It can never be.
The thrill and the hurting
Will never be mine.

Such a brilliant idea....I collect quotes compulsively on the backs of notebooks, on tiny scraps of paper, just everywhere!

Here's a small smattering of ones in my collection that mean something extra special to me...

As the elephant said to his mistress, the mouse...
Nothing is ever easy...these days.
-Rowan Atkinson "Weddings"

"I don't want to live. I want to love first, and live incidentally."
~Zelda Fitzgerald

And be grateful. Our scars have the power to remind us that the past was real. - Red Dragon

We weep for a bird's cry, but not for a fish's blood. Blessed are those with a voice. If the dolls also had voices, they would have screamed, "I didn't want to become human." - The Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence

No, the time for justice, the time for freedom, and the time for equality is always, is always right now! - The Great Debaters

There is only one freedom of any importance, freedom of the mind. -Judi Dench in the movie Iris

How happy is the blameless Vestal's lot! / The world forgetting, by the world forgot / Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind! / Each pray'r accepted, and each wish resign'd. - Alexander Pope's "Eloisa to Abelard"

And finish up with one of my favorite showtunes...
"Fine, Fine, Line" from Avenue Q

There's a fine, fine line between a lover and a friend,
And there's a fine, fine line between reality and pretend.
And you never know til you reach the top if it was worth the uphill climb.
There's a fine, fine line between love and a waste of your time.

There's a fine, fine line between a fairy tale and a lie,
And there's a fine, fine line between "you're wonderful" and "goodbye".
I guess if someone doesn't love you back, it isn't such a crime,
There's a fine, fine line between love and a waste of your time.

And I don't have the time to waste on you any more.
I don't think that you even know what you're looking for.
For my own sanity, I've gotta close the door and walk away.

There's a fine, fine line between together and not,
And there's a fine, fine line between what you wanted and what you got.
You gotta go after the things you want while you're still in your prime.
There's a fine, fine line between love and a waste of your time.
Some children dreamed of becoming firemen & mothers, I wanted to be a canine. Yay for unrealistic goals!

Great one fifthsonata.

I read this one in a book today "There are some things you learn best in calm, some in storm." -Willa Cather

and this one as well...hard to know which hit me harder.

*speaking about a family building the best life they could* "Not perhaps what we expected, but what can grown in the shallow ground of so many disappointments?" From the "The Glass Case" by Kristin Hannah

Two lines from Tennyson's "The splendour falls on castle walls" always strikes a chord:

"Our echoes roll from soul to soul,
And grow for ever and for ever."

Such a lovely way of putting it!

Also like Warren Zevon's:

"Send lawyers, guns and money / The shit has hit the fan"
