Poem - Trying to Love Me

Trying to Love Me
It hurts to look into the truth,
The broken road of my youth.
I hide the things I don’t want you to see,
Because I’m trying to get you to love me.
I lived behind my anger and fears,
The dark side of my younger years.
Mom was so sick, in body and mind.
Dad up and moved, and left us behind.
I cannot explain, I cannot say,
Why our family was breaking in so many ways.
I wish my parents had held up their part.
Instead they left me with voids in my heart.
Now I remain, searching my soul,
Trying to find the parts of my whole.
So if you still want me, if you still care,
Please have patience, so I can repair.
I need some space to just be free,
Because right now, I’m trying to love me.
