My BMX Arrived

As a child, I would ride my BMX through the streets of the town where we lived. I recently revisited those streets after four decades away. It was a profound experience, with a surge of feeling, both traumatic and cathartic. And the BMX was my vehicle of escape from an early, volatile family home. I still remember shooting from the front gate and down the street, the breeze blowing, the sun on my face and my legs pumping. And so when I returned from that trip to my now-home, I determined to get a BMX bike so that I could relive the bittersweet pleasure. My new (adult) BMX bike arrived yesterday and it did not disappoint. There's something about the nature of a BMX; the way it coasts down the hill, giving way to gravity, as you stand as though taking flight; it's unlike other bikes; or other experiences. It's affect is as powerful now as it was at 4 years old.
