Hello all, this is my first posting of the forum. I have been listening to the podcast for about a year. It really is a great resource for me. It adds flavor to my journey of healing and recovery.
I am an Asian-American heterosexual male in my early 30s.
My journey has been a tough but great one. I am a sex addict, alcoholic, addict in general. Working support groups for various issues led me to a road of self discovery that has been a mixture of different emotions. I have supplemented my journey with individual therapy and group therapy which has been another tool for me to start peeling away the layers in the never ending journey to find my true self.
The most painful part of this journey has been looking at how much my childhood plays a part in the unhealthy behaviors and thoughts that permeate my soul. I have a history of sexual abuse from a male neighbor when I was about 10 years old. Prior to that there were some sexual boundary issues with my mother which are still unclear, but becoming more clear that it may be sexual abuse. There were some sexual boundary issues between me and my sister as well at a young age. My parents were also in a loveless, dysfunctional marriage with alcohol use in the home. My parents were high functioning jolly drinkers, but their drinking still bothered me.
Anyway I am continually in a process of attempting to heal the wounds of my childhood while trying to function in society the best I can. My pain goes deeper, but I wanted to also talk about positive things going on in my life.
Through this whole process of self discovery I have realized I want to help others. I have great therapists that have helped me through some very tough times. I am in the process of applying to graduate school to get my masters in counseling psychology. I majored in business during undergraduate school and have been working in the business field for the past 10 years, but it is not satisfying my calling.
My hope is that I heed the calling of becoming a therapist/counselor or wherever this path takes me to help others. The traumas that I experienced, coupled with my hyper sensitivity to my feelings and the feelings of others, can be used to help others. I am hoping to help individuals struggling with sexual addiction, alcohol/drug addiction, or possibly working in the Asian community to increase awareness of the importance of mental health since the Asian community for the most part has a stigma associated with mental health care.
Anyway this is me in a nutshell. I am really happy to share with you my introduction and hope to be an active participant in these forums.
Peace....
My journey

You can never change where you're from
No matter who I will accuse
I'm gonna get on with a better life
And one day I won't be bad news

Re: My journey
There are a lot of great things you've got going. I like how you looked to focus on the positive here.
You've got a journey ahead, and it seems like you are headed in the right direction. While I wish I could take all the pain away, I can't. But I hope you can find support here, as we all can give support, and can get it here.
Blessings and peace in your journey!
