Mindfulness
Re: Mindfulness
Hi Beany,
The idea of disgust being unacceptable to a parent seems both odd and familiar. I wonder what all of our lives would have been like had we been born to parents who could tolerate negative emotions in their children.
Have you seen the Pixar movie "Inside"? Disgust is one of the personified emotions of a little girl named Riley.
"This is Disgust. She basically keeps Riley from being poisoned—physically and socially."
—Joy, opening narration
I accept your disgust, Beany.

Re: Mindfulness
Continuing with disgust practice.
I’ve also been doing compassion meditation regularly and realize now it was not a coincidence. Compassion and disgust sort of go hand in hand. Especially for a compassion novice.
When I’ve been allowing my disgust to express itself unfiltered, it is very much easier to also feel and show compassion.
That includes self-disgust/compassion.
It’s something like:
Disgust + dignity => compassion

Re: Mindfulness
I’m winging it a little but this trail is warm.
- Disgust balances compassion
- Disgust protects your mind from ‘poison’ so it can exercise kindness
- Compassion that can defy burnout is valuable

Re: Mindfulness
I had this thought today,
‘I’m almost never right.’
Inexplicably, it made me feel happy.
I’m not quite sure why just yet.
I’m curious though.

Re: Mindfulness
My dad once said to me that they took a hands off approach to parenting me; the implication being that independence would foster resilience and self-reliance.
In hindsight, it created the sense that there was no one there… period. It’s a world relentlessly teeming with strangers.
‘I’m almost never right’, the thought I had that made me happy, did so in relation to that psychological reality, I think.
The world is full of strangers. But, I’m almost never right. So…

Re: Mindfulness
hmm
there is something there, really profound
"i am almost never right (as a positive notion)" & "alone in a world of strangers" & "raised by parents that told themselves what they were doing was a sincere effort to raise independent kids by doing nothing at all"
