A song that i relate to a lot is Human Sadness by Julian Casablancas i think its about his dad but the lyrics resonate so much with me i love it a lot. Its a bit long, but it makes me feel okay to be sad i dont know. This is my first post here.

Hey Dovakin,
I had to try a bit but ended up digging the JC song you posted very much. (This is what I love about this thread!!) Not something I necessarily would have come across nor taken the time with that I did had it not been on this board. It feels like a dirge, a requiem for... all of us, perhaps. A deeply felt reflection on human joy, folly, and destruction from some remove, perhaps from Rumi's "field". And is it me, or does this strongly remind of Guns n' Roses "November Rain"? Thanks for posting--strong stuff.

Oh man im just elated that someone took the time to listen and appreciate it. I guess yeah i can see the November rain qualities in it. I love the Rumi reference and the line where he says Its all my fault, such emotion conveyed through his voice. I love the song you guys shared earlier in the thread Alone Again. I listened to it on repeat for a whole day basically.

Wow, Aimee Mann's songs can pack such huge themes so compactly. My impressions: the point of view of this song, as in others of hers, seems to be of someone who's been hurt yet knows that to close herself off as a result would only further the damage. And she doesn't merely point the finger at the one who let her down. She doesn't let the other person off the hook or self-blame. But she does recognize her own role in whatever happened, her responsibility to manage her own expectations and temper her own illusions, and she seems willing to make amends of sorts with the person (with conditions, and that's key). There are a lot of songs about disillusionment, but this one suggests how one might deal with it constructively and grow rather than remain bitter and stuck. I also can't help but think that the use of the words/terms: "charity" "golden idol" and "Caesar" are significant and refer (likely ironically?) to Biblical/religious themes, perhaps of false authority, illusion, forgiveness. Just my 2 cents worth of free associating

My interpretation is pretty close to yours. I have a tendency to always (desperately) see the best in people I have feelings for, even when it's to my own detriment. A condition that continues when when I know that's what's happening. I think the the fact that this particular bout of depression was linked to getting screwed over by a guy I like (while knowing I built up unfair expectations) is part of the reason I'm so hung up on this particular song right now.
