Alone Among Friends

Once again I'm alone among my “friends”,
Their laughter and conversation all around me.
Yet they feel so distant and unaware
Why, I must be “out of body”.
I stand and ponder who I really am,
And then wonder who owns the voices all around me
.
Familiar faces stare, yet don’t seem to recognize me,
Even though they see me almost every day.
The ghost of who I once was mercilessly haunts me,
Mockingly telling me all about how I've failed.

So of course the mocking smiles of others simply confirm my guilt.
Still something tells me that I must somehow try once more,
Again I must walk on stage alone and perform my part.

Sadly, in the end that's really all that I have left.
