It makes me sad that there are now people who don't get this reference because they're too young to have experienced Mystery Science Theater 3000. Boy, I feel old!

Would it be worth asking him to go to couples counseling about it? If he has other reasons, maybe he'd explain them to someone else. But it sounds like the situation is just creating resentment all around, so you need to do something.

Cathy was always one of my favorite comedians, so I was thrilled to see her as a guest! Sad that someone I like has problems, but there you go.

It's hard to accept when you make an effort and others don't. I'm sympathetic, as I keep trying with a former friend because I keep hoping she'll go back to the person she used to be. But that doesn't seem to be happening. But you're not stupid to be hopeful. Don't beat yourself up over it.
