Episode 323: Family Secrets & Hiding Depression - Patricia

Post by SpookyGhost »

How does a family deal with its secrets? The PhD opens up about the inter-generational rage brewing beneath the surface of her extended family and the difficulty in trying to cope when favorites are played, a mother feels jealous of her daughter, trauma isn't discussed, emotions are stuffed and through depression a smile is mustered for the unsuspecting outside world.

I teared up when Patricia talked about not feeling heard around her medical issues. It's a scary feeling to put something so personal, private and also, urgent out there only to have it casually dismissed or fall on deaf ears. It can develop into a difficulty being able to even put the right words together at all. It's also hard to surmise that medical professionals will hear you and respond the way you need, after a parent has conditioned you to minimize your medical issues. It's a revelation the first time you experience a doctor not simply as an extension of a less-than-trustworthy parent; but instead as someone separate; someone experienced, trained and ready to act directly for your welfare. For anyone who suffers from that kind of selective dysphasia (difficulty trusting speech) around medical issues, that moment can be life saving.
