When I want to be particularly empowered:

Artist: Rammstein
Album: Herzeleid
Run!

Because the master has sent us
we announce the downfall
the rider of malice
is feeding his ulcer of envy

The truth is like a thunderstorm
it comes to you, you can hear it
to reveal it, is oh so bitter
it comes to you to destroy

Because the night lay dying
we announce judgment day
there will be no mercy
run, run for your lives

The truth is a choir of wind
no angel is coming to avenge you
these days are your last
it will break you apart like little sticks

It comes to you as decay

The truth is a choir of wind
no angel is coming to avenge you
these days are your last
it will break you apart like little sticks

Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything.
That's how the light gets in.

Plushgun - Just Impolite (especially the bolded lines)

Friday night became so lonely,
When you came to make a break,
That seemed to take all day to make me angry 'cause I
Like you, maybe I'm just Like You
Holding on to something that we know we can not hold
or fold it seems we just can't forget
Are you frightened, by perfection?
Is this who you are, not who you want to be,

I walk the line like Johnny Cash
I made the bus in seconds flat
I called your line too many times
I'm not obsessed, just impolite.

Sunday came and went so quickly
now you say you want me back
you will hold on, despite my cons,
it seems we're meant to hate it!
Being so dependent.
But it seems we can believe that we're two peas in this pod
we call New York, gets so lonesome.
Are you frightened, by neglection?
Am I who you want to see yourself to be?

I walk the line like Johnny Cash
I made the bus in seconds flat
I called your line too many times
I'm not obsessed, just impolite

You're stuck on me, you don't know why
Can't leave me anytime you try
They say that everybody cries
so don't think twice 'cause it's alright.

Stay here,
touching you, touching the light in your eyes
that keeps coming back

Stay here,
touching you, touching the light in your eyes
that keeps coming back

Stay here,
touching you, touching the light in your eyes
that keeps coming back

It wasn't for no reason that I took my screen name from this song.

"My Poor Friend Me"
by Bad Religion

I know a man who doesn't have many friends,
I know a place he lives where trouble never ends,
I know it's hard for him to read between the lines,
And his days are getting so much shorter.

He simply turns away instead of bearing down,
His world is crumbling, his ship is weighted down,
He doesn't care as long as he can wear the crown,
I know this man all too well.

It's my poor friend me, a portrayal of a great dichotomy.
It's my poor friend me, and I'm running out of steam.

I know of people who are cynical and vain,
They point their fingers 'cause they can't accept the blame,
They live their lives under a blanket of shame,
And their progency crawl from underneath it.

Lately I've come to see the solution, and it begins with me.
But I'm so fallibly human, I've picked the lock but will not turn the key.

Of people running scared, we live breathe and die,
All too aware that time is ticking on by,
We have solutions but don't even try,
And I feel I know jst who to blame.

It's my poor friend me, a reminder of a tragic history.
It's my poor friend me, and I'm running out of steam.

I love that there's a thread for this type of stuff. I am one who believes in the power of music, from healing to mood stimulation and back. Music, song and lyric can do it all. Loving the posts I've seen so far, now to finish reading.

What a great thread! I'll post the first two that came to mind for me.

The first is from the Pearl Jam song "Black"

"I know someday you'll have a beautiful life, I know you'll be the sun in somebody else's sky. But, why can't it be mine?"
I love the way that Eddie Vedder sings this and it was always comforting when I was single in some way. Like the pain I'd felt after a break-up or just from feeling loneliness was not exclusive to me. I was not alone.

The second is from the Tool song "The Grudge"

"Give away the stone. Let the oceans take and transmutate this cold and fated anchor.
Give away the stone. Let the waters kiss and transmutate the leaden grudges into gold.
Let go."

I think of this when I feel like my guilt, rage, anger, and depression is overwhelming in my body. It feels like a stone in the pit of my stomach. This is a reminder to "give away the stone."

Thanks for creating this thread!

This one caught my eye.

I think Rollo May wrote that in mental illness, the sufferer's relationship with time is distorted.

But these seem quite normal and relate-able;

“How to stop time: kiss.
How to travel in time: read.
How to escape time: music.
How to feel time: write.
How to release time: breathe.”

So many song lyrics that rattle around my brain.

"People are strange when you're a stranger
Faces look ugly when you're alone
Women seem wicked when you're unwanted
Streets are uneven when you're down" --The Doors "People are Strange"

When the truth is found to be lies
And all the joy within you dies
Don't you want somebody to love? --Jefferson Airplane "Somebody to Love"

A chill ran though me
And I grabbed on tight
That was when I left my body for good
And I shook off all the strength I'd earned
I wanted so badly not to be me
I wanted so badly not to be me
I saw my shadow looking lost
Checking it's pockets for some lost receipts
Where did I leave that fire? --Neko Case "Where Did I Leave That Fire"
I don't like people much and they don't much like me. -A Beautiful Mind
I'm Homesick for a home I never had.--Soul Asylum "Homesick"

I learned the truth at seventeen
That love was meant for beauty queens
And high school girls with clear skinned smiles
Who married young and then retired.
The valentines I never knew
The Friday night charades of youth
Were spent on one more beautiful
At seventeen I learned the truth.
And those of us with ravaged faces
Lacking in the social graces
Desperately remained at home
Inventing lovers on the phone
Who called to say come dance with me
And murmured vague obscenities--Janis Ian "At Seventeen"
I don't like people much and they don't much like me. -A Beautiful Mind
I'm Homesick for a home I never had.--Soul Asylum "Homesick"
