A Poem

Post by pattywhack13 »

I wrote this after a lecture given by Joe Klein of Time Mag. at University of Texas. The lecture was about veterans returning home. Really nervous about posting this, as I'm not sure what kind of response such heavy-handed subject matter will garner. Oh well, Carpe Diem.

Rhyme and Reason

Say your goodbyes, cut the ropes,
Masochist cars and bare breast gropes.
Make your stand, protect your pride
Leave your loved ones to go and die.

Tell them what you’re fighting for,
Let them know that it’s your war.
Sell your possessions, take your time,
“Please tell me why your songs don’t rhyme.”

Injure others, save yourself
Leave their company on the shelf.
Finally get out of what you’ve known
And see the seeds of what you’ve sewn.

Forsake your eyesight, learn your caste
Watch the memories and hope they last.
You shot for others and shot the score.
Who really are you anymore?

Slowly slinking sands of time
Translate into Clemintines
From the trees outside your door.
What the hell are you waiting for?

Let them see that you don’t know
How many bullets you have left to go,
That you wanted something more than this
Melodramatic way to exist.

Go to rehab, get patched up,
Tell them everything, just erupt.
Let them know how close you are,
And let them know how you got that scar.

Tell them about the plans you had
Before all of this, before Baghdad,
To run for office, save your town,
But there’s no chance they’ll vote for you now.

The soundtrack plays as life plays on,
But some things you are still stuck on.
There’s still no rhyming in your song.
And, even still, you can’t, won’t, don’t
Sing along.

I like it. Not sure I completely get it, but that makes it all the more intriguing.
